Once your mission ends, you will have an opportunity to review the engagement in detail using the After Action Review (AAR) interface. This will allow you to see where key engagements occurred and how effective the gunnery was.

  • When you are dropped into the After Action Review interface, you will be presented with some performance statistics for all the players.
  • Once you are done looking over the statistics, switch the knob on the right from Briefing to Terrain to view the map.

  • Go to the menu Show and check show actual enemy. This will show all vehicles, enemy and friendly, on the 2D map.

  • There is a playhead, some playback controls, a perspective dropdown, and some context options that you want to get familiar with.
    • First, grab the playhead and scrub it along the timeline. With all units turned on, you will see all the formations and units, friendly and enemy alike, move along the map. You will also see units engaging and getting destroyed. You will also see artillery missions that impact – they will show up as flashing squares or rectangles highlighting the area of the mission and its duration.

Use this method the gain an understanding of how the battle went. I usually scrub forward through the entire mission while the map is zoomed out to see how the enemy units behaved and reacted to friendly unit actions.

Once you have reviewed the 2D map, you can next check out some engagements in 3D. Check Events, uncheck All Events, and then use the fast forward button to jump to a unit that has received a hit. The text box to the right will provide some interesting information, like who made the shot and what damage it caused. Change the dropdown box to World at this point and you will view the unit taking hits in the 3D world. You will see the vector of the shot in question and where it hit the vehicle.

You can also press Numpad + to view this mode through thermals. This is useful if you took a hit and were wondering how on earth the enemy could see you. Switching to thermals often gives you some insight on how visible you really were.

While in 3D, you can move around the map, so you can move towards the shooter and see exactly where they were when they fired.

You can also right click the map and choose “View” to get a better look at enemies and their positions, even if they have not fired. This is useful to check out enemy ambush points or just to see what kinds of enemies were lying in wait.

Screenshots

During the game, you may want to take and share screenshots from your perspective. Press Shift-F12 to take an in-game screenshot. These will be saved at Drive:\Users\Your_User_Name\Documents\eSim Games\Steel Beasts\savedImages

The After Action Review interface is a helpful way to examine how a mission went and how your own units performed and responded to the enemy. It offers you an opportunity to learn from your mistakes and it also quite cool to simply see what you were up against.
